Rainbow House to visit OES Guidance

Dear Oconto Parents and/or  Guardians,

On February 4th, 6th, 8th, and 22nd Allyson Mahlik Child/Youth Advocate from Rainbow House will be providing lessons for the 2nd grade students during the regular guidance time.

Grade Level: 2nd 

Name of Program:Tulip's Safety Program

Length: 3 sessions

Objective: To create awareness about domestic abuse, the effects on a family and how Rainbow House can help. This programming also focuses on non-violent conflict resolution techniques. Each child will create their own safety plan, and be able to identify five safe adults and three safe places within their homes.

Session #1

- Pre-Survey

- What is Rainbow House? What is a shelter? I show and discuss pictures of the shelter.

- What is domestic violence/types of abuse? (We only discuss verbal, emotional, and physical abuse.) I bring in a puzzle with the pieces that make up domestic abuse.

- Video "Tulip Doesn't Feel Safe" - This award winning video helps children understand what domestic abuse is and shows them a great technique how to handle problems.

Session #2

 - Review what domestic violence is by playing a game with the puzzle pieces.

- Discusssion of the video and questions.

- "Safe People, Safe Places", Students will create a list of 5 safe adults and identify 3 safe places within the home.

Session #3

- A visit with a local or county law enforcement officer, if available, who will talk about their job duties, domestic violence, how they respond to calls, and what the child can expect.

- Post survey

Name of Program: My Friendships

Length: 2 sessions

Objective: To help students understand the importance of respect and what it means to be a good friend. This is to help students recognize what disrespectful, bullying. or abusive behavior looks like. Students will also learn how to be safe at home and at school.

Session #1 "Bullying and Respect"

- Explain what Rainbow House, domestice abuse and a shelter are. We will discuss verbal, emotional, and physical abuse. I will show pictures of the shelter and explain what help we can provide to keep people safe.

- What is bullying? We eill discuss that bullying is abuse and link them to physical, verbal, and cyber abuse.

- We will do an activity on respect together as a class.

Session #2 "How to be Safe"

- What is safe? How does it feel to be safe or unsafe? What can I do to be safe? It's important for children to know signals thier bodies give when they are safe and unsafe. We'll demonstrate this by doing an activity about personal space and talking about different situations that occur and how they would feel.

- Creating their safety neworks. Students will be creating a list of safe and trusted adults they can talk to. We will discuss how to be persistent in getting their concerns about their feelings and safety across until someone listens to them.

- We will end with questions and answers and an evaluation.
