April 16, 2020Our country's current pandemic has been difficult for many of us, but today we are celebrating the positives that still exist. The Class of 2020 is being faced with significant change as they wrap up their senior year. Let's not focus on the challenges we might face, but the accomplishments that our students have already attained. The Oconto High School Class of 2020 is ripe with grittiness, and that grit is exemplified through our two student leaders that will represent their class as Valedictorian and Salutatorian. Their achievement should provide hope and shed a positive light on days to come.~Adam DeWitt, OHS PrincipalCongratulations to our Achievers!Alayna Westenberg-Valedictorian:Alayna Jean Westenberg has earned the rank of Valedictorian of the Oconto High School Class of 2020. She is the daughter of Steve and Debbie Westenberg, sister of Kelsey & Scott Reynolds and Zach Westenberg, and the aunt of Reid Reynolds. She is the granddaughter of Larry and Joan Westenberg and Aldona and the late Leonard Hansel.Alayna has been very active both in school and in the community. Some of her school activities include: National Honor Society (vice president), Hi-Q academic team (regional qualifiers the past two years), Math team, Student Council (president), Band (brass captain), Jazz Band, M & O Honor Band, Class Treasurer, Science Club, Link Crew, Badger Girl, Prom and Homecoming Courts, Boys Baseball statistician, Volleyball, and Cross Country (most improved award two consecutive years).Her community activities include: Miss Copperfest 2019, student ambassador and regular blood donor for the American Red Cross, and volunteer at the Kingdom Come Food Pantry, Riverview Alliance Church, and Care Partners Assisted Living. Alayna also established and is the stewardess of the Bond Park Little Free Library.Alayna’s other interests include: playing the piano, travel, and personal fitness. She is also a certified nursing assistant.
Alayna will be attending the University of Wisconsin-Madison this fall and majoring in neurobiology with the intention of becoming a physician assistant. Her wiHannah Wusterbarth-Salutatorian:
Hannah Caitlyn Wusterbarth has earned the rank of Salutatorian of the Oconto High School, Class of 2020. She is the daughter of Jerry and Tania Wusterbarth, and sister of Tyler Wusterbarth. Hannah is the granddaughter of Kathy (Boyd) Thomas, Bill (Ann) LaChapell, Gerald E. Wusterbarth, and Bonnie (Don) Forgette.
Hannah has been very active in school clubs, activities, and athletics during her high school career. Some of these include: National Honor Society (President), Class Officer (President) Concert and Pep Bands (Woodwinds Captain), Jazz Band, M & O Honor Band, Regional Solo and Ensemble, Wisconsin State Music Festival (all 4 years), Prom and Homecoming Courts (Homecoming Queen), Science Club, Link Crew, Math team, Student Council, OHS Wrestling team statistician, OHS Varsity Softball team (Team Captain Jr. and Sr. years, All-District 1st Team, 1st Team Packerland All-Conference), and Cross Country (Team Captain).
Hannah’s community involvement includes: Volunteering her time and talents in various roles with the Oconto Wrestling and Youth Softball Programs, the Trail of Terror, Oconto Fly-In, performing at local Memorial and Veteran’s Day programs, and working in the Deli at Wagner Shell. She is a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Oconto.
Hannah’s other interests include: traveling the Midwest; competing as a member of the Impact Sports Academy “Stars” club softball team (year round), playing the saxophone and clarinet, staying physically fit, and spending time with her family and dog, Gunther.
Hannah will be attending the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater this fall, majoring in Finance and Mathematics, while continuing her passion for athletics as a member of the UW-Whitewater Women’s Softball Team. Go War Hawks!
